    Region of Waterloo Development Strategy

    In the creation of a new economic development strategy, partners within Waterloo Region are seeking to identify growth priorities that reflect current and future economic opportunities that can be accomplished collectively. It is believed that such an objective must consider the rise in newcomers call Waterloo Region home. In the words of Jeffrey MacDonald, a spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada,
    “Increased immigration means more people in our workforce contributing to our social programs and growing our communities.” The cultural makeup of Waterloo Region is rapidly changing, which provides a unique opportunity for different perspectives and forward-thinking practices. The creation of a strategic plan is one of these practices. It is often the case that when such strategic initiatives take place, and consultation occurs, racialized and cultural communities are excluded and underrepresented. For this reason aim was to provide facilitation experiences that were not simply about extracting data from participants, but inviting them into acts of co-creation.

    The job fair attracted a diverse group of attendees from underrepresented communities, reinforcing a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workforce. Participants appreciated the opportunity to learn about career pathways and access resources to navigate the employment process successfully. The partnership between EthicTalent and WRDSB underscores the shared dedication to creating equitable hiring practices and empowering African, Caribbean, Black, and racialized individuals to thrive in education-focused careers.

    Ethic Talent’s facilitation, research, and synthesis of community input helped to shape a strategy centered on inclusive growth and community empowerment. EthicTalent’s recommendations offered a blueprint for leveraging local assets and fostering partnerships to build a sustainable and equitable economic ecosystem in the Waterloo Region.

    Community Conversation - Youth Hub Event Facilitation

    Youth Wellness Hub Networks that provide high-quality integrated youth services to support the well-being of young people aged 12 to 25, including mental health and substance use supports, primary health care, community and social supports, and more.

    Facilitation Discussion: about diversifying how the Region of Waterloo is reaching youth and coupling services together to reduce barriers to access to mental health services while providing a vast array of services to meet their needs.

    Engaging with communities to increase confidence in HPV vaccines.

    THE GOAL:

    Training cultural community leaders to deliver education on HPV vaccination is a proactive and effective approach to promoting awareness and increasing vaccination rates within specific communities.

    Building Safer Communities

    The Building Safer Communities (BSC) initiative aims to reduce legal system involvement among African, Caribbean, and Black-identifying (ACBi), First Nations, Inuit, Métis (Indigenous), and other racialized youth in the Waterloo Region. By funding culturally appropriate mental health and addiction support, as well as crisis response initiatives, BSC strives to enhance youth safety and wellbeing. A key objective of the project is to develop a non-police alternative framework for addressing mental health and addiction crises, tailored specifically for youth.

    The insights gathered from these conversations were instrumental in informing the development of a culturally sensitive and youth-centered crisis response framework, aligning with BSC’s mission to build safer, more inclusive communities.

    EthicTalent played a pivotal role in shaping the BSC initiative by facilitating four community conversations across Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo. These conversations were designed to elevate the voices and lived experiences of ACBi, Indigenous, and racialized youth. Through these dialogues, EthicTalent achieved three critical goals

    Raising Awareness

    Introducing the Building Safer Communities initiative to the community.

    Gathering Insights

    Collecting firsthand accounts of how youth experience and respond to mental health and substance use crises.

    Identifying Gaps

    Highlighting areas where current crisis support systems fail to meet the needs of these communities.

    Job Fair for African, Caribbean black & Racialized Individuals

    EthicTalent Job Fair for African, Caribbean, Black & Racialized Individuals in Partnership with Waterloo Region District School Board
    EthicTalent, in collaboration with the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), successfully hosted a job fair specifically designed to connect African, Caribbean, Black, and other racialized individuals with meaningful employment opportunities within the education sector.

    The event provided a welcoming and inclusive platform for job seekers to explore careers in teaching, administration, educational support, and other school-based roles.
